GOALS
Georgia College & State University is pleased to accept applications for its first ever Young Scientist's Academy. The academy is an exciting, commuter summer program for talented students with strong interests in science. Students entering grades 9-12 will
Participants in the 2009 program will examine real-world challenges in the Physical and Environmental Sciences. The program is designed to reinforce what students learned in middle grades and underscore what they will learn in high school and beyond. The Academy will engage participants in activities that will immerse them in the culture of science while having fun. YSA offers a unique opportunity for participants to meet other exceptional high school students. Social and recreational activities will promote interactions and build friendships.
The Academy
The seven-week academy will be held on the beautiful campus of Georgia College & State University (GCSU) in Milledgeville, Georgia. GCSU faculty from the Department of Biological & Environmental Sciences and the Department of Chemistry & Physics as well as community scientists will work also alongside the Young Scientist will be actively engaged in hands-on, "minds-on" experiences in the laboratory and in outdoor natural settings. The Young Scientist will have the opportunity to conduct cutting-edge scientific research one-on-one with a faculty mentor, meet and work with other scientists, and present research to faculty, students, area scientists and the community at a closing reception on the final day of the program.
The academy will be held on June 1 - July 17, 2009 from 9:00 am - 5:00 pm Monday - Thursday.
Participants must bring lunch daily. No open-toed sandals or shorts (skirts or pants) will be permitted in lab.
Participants may choose to change into laboratory clothing on campus.
Selection Process
Participants
will receive a small stipend at the end of the program.
Enrollment will be limited to 2 young scientists.
Applications will be reviewed by a committee of the Academy faculty and staff.
The registration deadline is May 8, 2009. A signed waiver of liability is required.
Selection will be based on strength of application, including:
Personal statement (300-words)
Academic teacher recommendation
Date application is received.
Research Awards:
Students who satisfactorily complete the academy will receive a total award of $1,800.
