The Natural History Museum opened in 2004 after more than 20 years of collecting fossils of plants and animals as well as modern vertebrate and invertebrate animals from local, national, and international sites. It boasts one of the largest fossil vertebrate collection in the Southeast. For example, the museum has a number of Ice Age fossils including a complete bison skull unearthed in Brunswick, Ga. There are also marine fossils from an inactive kaolin mine in Wilkinson County. Other fossils in the collection come from various digs in North and South America.
